This greyscale image depicts an older SS watchtower design located at the main Auschwitz II-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp at Ofiar Faszyzmu 12, 32-600 Brzezinka, Poland.
This guard tower overlooks part of the Hungarian women’s camp. Most of these SS watchtowers were replaced with taller ones with slats, windows and sleeping areas for 2-4 SS patrolmen. Each watchtower stood on concrete blocks and typically housed two SS guards, one with a searchlight and one with a sniper rifle.
